![]() ![]() I had an interesting coincidence yesterday, perhaps because I made this topic. That was a way many people got first introduced to mahjong along with the rules for how to actually play Riichi back in the late '00s and early '10s, before leaving the sparrows-nest for Tenhou. I think the only thing that's missing is the mahjong flash-game. But I didn't know there was such a noticeable Chowder influence on mahjong popularity. It's thought that some of the first card games-decks such as Tarot and the standard 52 deck Western cards-are based on, is possibly a deck with some of the 108 characters as the original motifs for the cards (which in turn Mahjong also derived itself from): Ī lot of the usual suspects here alright: Yakuza, Akagi/Kaiji, Saki, FF14, and Chinese family/friends. Like with the more famous Romance of the Three Kingdoms novel, some of these characters became a basis for popular archetypes in Japanese media such as with many manga and game series. The Suikoden game-series itself is based on the Outlaws of the Marsh (or Water Margin) classic Chinese novel, forming a story surrounding 108 unique characters. I think this is based on a simplified 2 player version called Donjara or Ponjan Mahjong in Japan, but with some interesting/unique mechanics such as revealing opponents tiles and rescuing tiles from the discard pile by using special "rune"-tiles that tie into some of the game lore. Suikoden IV had a lot of minigames and this was my favorite one-though I've probably seen Mahjong tiles before that in some solitaire game versions and such.Ī sample of the gameplay mechanics of Ritapon found on Youtube: I think the first place I learned any sort of Mahjong mechanics was in the Ritapon minigame in Suikoden IV back in 2005, and I remember quickly being addicted to playing it.
